The toys are back and bigger than ever. Toy Story 5 has delivered the biggest opening of 2026 so far, earning a franchise-record $160 million domestically from 4,425 North American theaters and a staggering $312 million worldwide. The animated sequel’s performance far surpassed the previous franchise benchmark set by Toy Story 4, which opened to $120 million domestically in 2019. Among all animated releases, Toy Story 5 now ranks as the second-biggest domestic opening weekend in history, trailing only 2018’s Incredibles 2 with $182.7 million.
Directed by Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton, the film follows Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, and the gang as their owner Bonnie, becomes consumed by a new kiddie smart tablet called Lilypad. The voice cast reunites Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and Joan Cusack, with an original song by Taylor Swift titled “I Knew It, I Knew You”.
The fifth installment carries a $250 million production budget and has already earned strong critical praise, holding a 94% Rotten Tomatoes score and an “A” CinemaScore from audiences . Industry analysts expect the film to cross $1 billion globally, following the trajectory of previous franchise installments, Toy Story 4 and Toy Story 3 both surpassed that milestone.
The film’s performance is a major win for Disney and Pixar after recent industry challenges. Top international markets included Mexico with $26.6 million, the United Kingdom with $20 million, and China with $18 million. While The Super Mario Galaxy Movie currently holds the year’s highest global gross overall, Toy Story 5 has claimed the biggest domestic debut of 2026.
With 11.5 million people attending across opening weekend and heavy matinee crowds, the sequel is well-positioned for sustained success throughout the summer. For a franchise that seemed to conclude with 2010’s Toy Story 3, the revival has proven remarkably lucrative, the series has now grossed over $3 billion across five films. Toy Story 5 is all but certain to continue that legacy.
