Ryan Coogler’s production company is making a major move in the television space. Proximity Media, the multi-platform studio founded by the acclaimed filmmaker, his wife Zinzi Coogler, and producer Sev Ohanian, has signed a multi-year, exclusive creative partnership with Netflix to develop new original series. The deal marks a significant transition for the company’s television output, which was previously housed at The Walt Disney Company.

The partnership was announced on June 19, 2026, with Proximity Media’s founders expressing excitement about the move. “We started Proximity Media with a simple goal: to tell event-driven stories that bring people in close proximity with often overlooked subjects,” the trio said in a joint statement. They added that they are “thrilled to partner with Netflix, a company that has consistently demonstrated its commitment to distinctive creators and original storytelling”.

Jinny Howe, Netflix’s Head of US and Canada Scripted Series, welcomed the team, stating that Proximity Media has “built a remarkable reputation for championing visionary creators and producing stories that resonate deeply with audiences worldwide”. The deal comes after Proximity Media’s previous five-year television agreement with Disney expired earlier this year.

Proximity Media’s television division has already built an impressive portfolio. Under the Disney deal, the company created Marvel Studios’ Ironheart for Disney+, the National Geographic docuseries Hurricane Katrina: A Race Against Time, and the animated series Eyes of Wakanda . The division is currently producing pilots for a new The X-Files series starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel, as well as a live-action adaptation of Southern Bastards featuring Kevin Bacon, Erin Kellyman, and Tim McGraw. These projects remain in development at Disney/Hulu. The company’s film arm recently achieved massive success with Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan, which became the highest-grossing original film of 2025 and earned multiple Academy Awards.
