The hit horror movie Obsession is getting a sequel, and director Curry Barker already has big plans for it. The 26-year-old filmmaker has confirmed that Obsession 2 is officially in development, though he’s in no rush to rush the follow-up to theaters. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Barker shared that he already has “such a cool idea” for the sequel involving a new story centered on the mysterious One Wish Willow. He’s keeping the specifics under wraps for now, but he’s clear about one thing: he wants to take his time and get it right.
The original film, released in May 2026, became a massive box office phenomenon. Made on a micro-budget of roughly $750,000, the movie has already grossed over $286 million worldwide, making it one of the most profitable horror hits of the decade. With that kind of success, a sequel was inevitable, but Barker is determined to avoid the pressure of a rushed follow-up.
Barker isn’t treating Obsession 2 as just another quick cash grab. He has a clear vision that could expand the universe in exciting ways. “I don’t want to go straight into Obsession 2,” Barker said. “I have such a cool idea for it that I won’t say”. He’s equally enthusiastic about exploring the premise as an anthology series, where each episode would follow a new character making a dangerous wish on a One Wish Willow. “This just happens to be a premise where there is a lot more to be done,” he explained. “It’s not really a sequel, it’s just a new guy or girl with a One Wish Willow. What does she wish for, and how did that mess up her life? There are so many stories to be told”.
The mythology behind the One Wish Willow is more complex than it first appears. Barker has revealed that the object itself isn’t inherently cursed . The real horror comes from the wishes people make, particularly Bear’s wish to take away Nikki’s free will. “The thing that Bear wishes for is cursed,” Barker explained. “Taking away someone’s autonomy, taking away someone’s self, that’s cursed”. This nuanced take suggests the sequel could explore wishes that aren’t inherently evil and possibly show a user getting away with their wish unscathed.
Before diving into Obsession 2, Barker is attached to write and direct a new installment in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise. He’s also in post-production on another project called Anything but Ghosts . For now, fans will have to wait patiently as he carefully crafts the next chapter. “I’m not saying it has to be five, six years from now,” he said. “But I think people would be just as excited for it if it came a little down the road”.
