James Barker, an executive producer for Love Island USA, has died at age 40 while filming Season 8 in Fiji. The producer suffered an unexpected medical emergency last week on the South Pacific island where the hit dating series is currently in production.
Barker joined ITV America in August 2020, starting as a story producer before working his way up through the franchise. After years of contributions on and off the set, he became a full-time executive producer in January 2026. His role oversaw both production and post-production elements, including the show’s soundtrack.
ITV America and Peacock confirmed the death in a joint statement shared across multiple news outlets. The networks plan to honor Barker in the Tuesday, June 16 episode of Love Island USA.
“James’ unimaginable loss has been deeply felt across not just the entire Love Island USA production, but throughout all of ITV and Peacock,” the statement read. “He was a beloved and greatly valued member of our collective family whose kindness, talent and dedication left an indelible mark on all of us”.
Just days before his death, Barker celebrated the current season on Instagram. He wrote from Fiji about the magic of their location and the power of the stories being told. “We come to Fiji for magic,” the post read. “Our islanders feel like the best part of us, and stories feel perfect and powerful… because here… they are”.
Details surrounding the medical emergency remain unclear at this time. The show continues production while cast and crew mourn the loss of a colleague described as deeply valued across the entire franchise.
Condolences have been extended to Barker’s partner, family, friends, and fellow production members as the Love Island USA community processes the tragedy during an active season.
