Legendary Italian race car driver and four-time Paralympic gold medalist Alex Zanardi has died. He was 59. The news that Alex Zanardi dies was confirmed by his family on Saturday morning, who announced that he passed away peacefully on Friday night, surrounded by loved ones. No cause of death was provided. Zanardi’s passing closes an extraordinary chapter in sports history, a story defined not by tragedy but by an unbreakable will to win, first on the asphalt of Formula 1 and later on the roads of Paralympic competition.

Zanardi competed in Formula 1 across five seasons for teams including Jordan, Minardi, Lotus, and Williams. After shifting to the CART series in North America, he captured back-to-back championships in 1997 and 1998. Then came the crash.

During a CART race at Germany’s Lausitzring in 2001, Zanardi was struck by an oncoming car at full speed. He lost both legs, one above the knee, the other at the hip. Doctors doubted he would survive. Instead, he designed his own prosthetics, learned to walk again, and found a new calling.

Zanardi’s second act defied every expectation. He took up hand cycling and quickly dominated the sport. At the London 2012 Paralympics, the Paralympic gold medalist won two golds. At Rio 2016, he added two more golds and a silver . He also conquered the New York City Marathon and set an Ironman record. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called him “a great champion and an extraordinary man” .

In June 2020, Zanardi suffered severe cranial and facial trauma in a handbike accident in Tuscany, colliding with an oncoming truck during a charity relay . He spent months in a medically induced coma and years recovering. His family kept his condition private until his passing.

F1 president Stefano Domenicali spoke for the world when he said: “He faced challenges that would have stopped anyone, yet he continued to look forward, always with a smile” . Alex Zanardi didn’t just survive. He redefined what survival means.
