Things are reportedly unwell inside the Unwell Network. Alex Cooper and her husband, Matt Kaplan, were notably absent from an all-hands meeting at their media company on Tuesday, April 21, just one day after a damning report detailed complaints about Kaplan’s behavior toward staff.
The gathering was intended to address show launches, employee retention, and concerns about the 42-year-old producer who runs the network’s day-to-day operations. Chief marketing officer T.J. Marchetti hosted the meeting, discussing expansion plans and leadership growth. He acknowledged employee departures but claimed the company’s turnover remains below that of other startups.
Neither Cooper, 31, nor Kaplan attended the meeting. They have not publicly addressed the ongoing claims.
The meeting came one day after Bloomberg published an investigation alleging dramatic staff turnover over the past two years. Kaplan has reportedly “earned a reputation for frequently yelling at staff members,” with some employees threatening to walk off projects if he “doesn’t keep his distance” .
The most striking allegation involves the set of the network’s YouTube series, Unwell Winter Games. Kaplan allegedly berated staff and threatened to prevent them from ever working in Hollywood again if they made mistakes. The incident reportedly left a prominent, long-experienced crew member in tears .
Formal complaints have been filed with leadership. Some employees have reportedly stated they would resign if Kaplan’s conduct does not improve.
The allegations stand in stark contrast to Cooper’s public statements about her company culture. In a 2025 Marie Claire interview, she said her door is “always open” and expressed a desire to create a “very positive and safe” environment for their young employees.
Kaplan, a film producer known for the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before franchise and XO, Kitty, met Cooper through a Zoom call in 2020. They married in April 2024. He was previously married to actress Claire Holt from 2016 to 2017.
The internal turmoil comes amid a separate public feud. Cooper recently addressed her falling out with former Unwell podcaster Alix Earle, whose “Hot Mess” podcast was dropped by the network in February 2025.
After Earle reposted a shady TikTok calling Cooper the “grim reaper,” Cooper fired back on April 13: “Just say what you gotta say about me. There’s no NDA, and no one is stopping you… What’s the beef?” Earle responded, “OK on it!!” but has yet to share further details .
As the company expands into TV production, live events, and a creative agency, the question remains whether leadership can steady the ship, or if more departures are on the horizon.
