Regina Hall Shuts Down ‘Girls Trip 2’ Rumors: “They Have Not Gotten the Script Right”

The Flossy Posse might not be packing their bags just yet. Despite months of optimistic updates from co-star Tiffany Haddish, Regina Hall has officially hit the brakes on rumors that Girls Trip 2 is ready for production. In a trending clip from the Today show’s Glass Half Full podcast that surfaced early Wednesday, April 8, 2026, Hall provided a sobering Girls Trip 2 movie status update 2026, revealing that a shootable script simply does not exist.

During her podcast appearance, Hall was asked about the timeline for the sequel to the 2017 blockbuster. Her response was immediate and firm. “There’s not going to be a sequel until the script is right, and we haven’t gotten that yet,” Hall told host Craig Melvin.

The actress, who played Ryan Pierce in the original film, emphasized that the cast is protective of the franchise’s legacy. “They have not gotten a script that’s right,” she added, making it clear that quality not speed is the primary driver for the core four, which includes Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith.

Hall’s comments stand in direct contrast to statements made by Tiffany Haddish over the last several months.

• November 2025: Haddish told Us Weekly that the group had a meeting and was “gonna start shooting probably next year,” specifically aiming for spring 2026.

• January 2026: In multiple interviews, Haddish claimed she had already read a draft that made her “laugh out loud three times.”

• February 2026: Haddish told reporters that filming was tracking for a summer start, potentially with locations in Africa.

When asked about the discrepancy, Hall admitted she often finds out about these “updates” in real-time with the public. “I found out with everyone else,” she previously noted, suggesting that while development is happening, the leads are not all seeing the same material at the same time.

Why the Delay?

The sequel has been in a state of “gestation” since 2017, hampered by several factors:

1. High Expectations: The original grossed $140 million on a $19 million budget; the cast wants to ensure the follow-up isn’t just a “Seniors Edition” cash grab.

2. Scheduling: All four actresses have seen their careers skyrocket since 2017, making a synchronized filming window difficult to secure.

3. Creative Alignment: Hall’s recent comments suggest that while various drafts have circulated (possibly the one Haddish enjoyed), they haven’t yet met the unanimous approval required to move into pre-production.

Fans shouldn’t lose hope entirely. Producer Will Packer has long confirmed that Girls Trip 2 is a priority for Universal Pictures, with the intention of bringing the Flossy Posse to an international locale like Ghana. However, per Regina Hall, “The script is the thing.” Until the writing matches the magic of the first film, the cameras will remain off.
