An awkward moment on daytime television has led to a rare public apology from comedian Howie Mandel. The America’s Got Talent judge has broken his silence following a heated back-and-forth with host Kelly Ripa during a March 24 episode of Live with Kelly and Mark, issuing a video apology in which he admitted, after some soul-searching, that his jokes didn’t land as intended.

The original exchange began warmly, with Ripa and her husband, Mark Consuelos, congratulating Mandel on his 70th birthday. When Consuelos noted that the comedian looked “great,” Mandel pushed back, arguing that the compliment came with an unspoken “caveat” related to his age. He likened the phrasing to telling someone they are “smart for a stupid person,” a comparison that drew laughs from the audience but introduced a visible tension to the segment.

For several days after the episode aired, clips of the tense exchange circulated widely online, sparking debate among fans about whether Mandel had overreacted to what was meant as a simple compliment. On March 28, Mandel addressed the controversy in an Instagram video, explaining that he had been debating the decision for 48 hours.

In the video, Mandel stated that philosophically, he does not believe a comedian should have to apologize for a joke. However, he made an exception for Ripa, citing her years of support and their history of co-hosting together. “Sometimes as a comedian, things don’t land the way you mean them to land,” he said.

The apology took a humorous turn when Mandel delivered the punchline he had been building toward. “Not only do I want to say I’m sorry to Kelly, but, and this is the hardest part, you’re right,” he said. “You’re absolutely right, and I’m sorry I didn’t see it that way.”

He concluded his video with a characteristically self-assured reflection: “After a lot of thought and self-reflection, I look great for my age. I really do. I look fantastic, and I just have to embrace the fact that I look this good.”

While the moment on Live with Kelly and Mark initially appeared tense, the swift apology has helped defuse the situation. Ripa and Consuelos had insisted during the original broadcast that their intention was simply to acknowledge how youthful Mandel appears, with Ripa clarifying that she simply didn’t believe he was 70.

For Mandel, who has spent 50 years in the entertainment industry, the incident served as a rare instance of public reflection. Fans of both the comedian and the talk show hosts appear satisfied with the resolution, viewing the interaction as a misunderstanding between longtime industry friends rather than a genuine feud.
