The boss battle has begun. Rick Ross has taken legal action against fellow rapper Remy Ma over her upcoming film “The Biggest Boss,” alleging the project infringes on his long-held nickname and music catalog. Ross’s attorneys sent a cease-and-desist letter to Remy’s streaming platform, The Remy Network, claiming the film features unauthorized use of his music and trade name and demanding production be halted. The move has ignited a firestorm in hip-hop, with fans speculating about underlying drama between the two artists who have maintained a friendship for over two decades.
The controversy centers on the film’s storyline, which follows a police officer who steals a drug dealer’s life story and turns it into a rap career. The narrative bears striking similarities to Ross’s own origin story. Before becoming one of hip-hop’s most recognizable figures, William Leonard Roberts II worked as a correctional officer in Florida for about two years in the 1990s, then adopted the “Biggest Boss” moniker and launched his music career.
The film’s original trailer compounded the issue by featuring Ross’s 2008 hit “The Boss,” his collaboration with T-Pain from the “Trilla” album . Ross’s legal team argues that the combination of the title, plot, and music creates confusion among fans, leading many to believe Ross is involved with or has endorsed the project . Social media comments cited in the legal filing allegedly show fans expressing exactly that confusion.
Remy Ma’s camp moved quickly to address the situation. A representative issued a statement emphasizing that Remy was “personally unaware of the concerns raised regarding ‘The Biggest Boss’ and takes the matter seriously” . The statement highlighted her 20-plus-year personal and professional relationship with Ross, insisting she would “never intentionally engage in any action that could harm his brand or cause offense” .
Within hours of receiving the legal notice, The Remy Network took action. The original trailer was pulled from the platform, and the film’s title was changed to “The C.O.” . Remy also personally reached out to Ross directly to address the issue, though reports indicate he has not yet returned her call . Her representative explained that an editor had mistakenly used Ross’s music and that the title was “immediately removed from the platform” upon discovery.
The legal battle hasn’t happened in a vacuum. Fans quickly speculated that the film might be retaliation against Ross for his public support of boxer Claressa Shields, who is currently dating Remy’s estranged husband, Papoose . Ross has been vocal in his support of Shields, walking her out before fights and backing her online, particularly amid her public exchanges with 50 Cent, who has a long-running feud with Papoose.
However, Remy’s representatives flatly denied these rumors, reiterating that she would never use her platform to attack Ross . Remy and Papoose married in 2008, but their relationship has been rocky in recent years. Remy confirmed their split in 2024 after being caught on camera with another battle rapper, and she has since made allegations of financial and emotional abuse against Papoose, which he has denied.
Despite Remy’s swift actions, it remains unclear whether the title change and music removal will fully satisfy Ross’s demands. His legal team warned of “considerable” liability and potential litigation for copyright infringement and deceptive business practices if the project proceeds in any form that infringes on his rights.
Meanwhile, the hip-hop world watches with amusement. 50 Cent, never one to miss an opportunity, weighed in on the drama with a laughing emoji-filled tweet: “😆 LOL what happened here HAHAHAHAAHHA LMAO”.
For now, “The C.O.” remains in limbo as The Remy Network reviews its internal processes to prevent similar situations. Ross has made one thing clear: in his empire, there’s only one biggest boss.
