18 July 2025 – Joshua Jackson has opened up about his disappointment following the unexpected cancellation of Doctor Odyssey, despite the show pulling record-breaking numbers for ABC.
The 47-year-old actor, best known for roles in Dawson’s Creek and Fringe, admitted he was left scratching his head after the network pulled the plug on what had been its most-watched debut drama in five years.
“I’m always bummed out when a show gets cancelled,” Joshua told People magazine. “That was a really good group of people, and it was a really fun show. I really, really enjoyed the experience.”
No Warning, No Explanation
While the show garnered strong initial ratings and built a loyal fan base, ABC didn’t offer Jackson or the team any real explanation for the cancellation.
“This is a crazy and difficult business… whatever the reasons were for them not wanting to move forward with it, they don’t actually tell us those things,” he added. “I’m going to miss the gang for sure.”
Jackson confirmed that his contract had “lapsed,” effectively sealing the show’s fate. Though there’s technically a chance Doctor Odyssey could return with a different cast, he’s not holding his breath.
“They may make that show with somebody else. I have no idea what their plans are. They haven’t let me know, but I’m not expecting it to come back.”
A Ryan Murphy Creation That Stood Out
The high-octane medical drama was co-created by Ryan Murphy, known for hits like American Horror Story and Glee. Jackson had nothing but praise for Murphy’s visionary approach.
“He dreams up incredible worlds and puts together great teams. Everybody from that show is going to be okay. It’s a bummer we don’t get to do it again, but I’m happy for the time that we got.”
A Short-Lived Fan Favorite
Although Doctor Odyssey was short-lived, Jackson hoped the viewers enjoyed the ride as much as he did:
“It was a beautiful, over-the-top kind of experience that was like nothing else on television. I’m sad we don’t get to go back and do it again.”
For now, fans can only hope for a surprise revival or spiritual spin-off in the Murphy-verse. But if nothing else, Doctor Odyssey will remain a one-season wonder that delivered high drama and big emotions in every episode.
