Doechii Says Preppy Fashion Is Her New Obsession: “It Makes Me Feel Confident”

18 July 2025 – Rap star Doechii is stepping into a fresh fashion era — and she’s loving every bit of it.

The 26-year-old artist, known for her bold presence and genre-bending sound, has revealed she’s currently obsessed with all things “preppy”, embracing smart, student-inspired looks that make her feel both powerful and stylish.

“I’m really attracted to a preppy style – it makes me feel confident, and it’s hot, it’s sharp, and I feel like me,” she told Vogue. “This next stage in my life – I’m not sure what it’s about yet.”

Doechii, whose real name is Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon, explained that her outfits always reflect her current headspace more than her identity. Right now, that headspace is giving academic chic meets hip-hop edge.

Styled With a Purpose

Her stylist Sam Woolf broke down her evolving look further, noting that they draw inspiration from labels like Miu MiuThom Browne, and Willy Chavarria — often building complete characters around an outfit.

“For Doechii, we’ve been leaning into the idea of her being a ‘student of hip-hop,’” Woolf told Forbes.

“It can be masculine, feminine, sporty, preppy, office wear – even a Motown twist. But they all live in the same world we’re creating.”

On Cosmetic Enhancements: “Let Women Do What They Want”

Beyond fashion, Doechii is also unapologetic about owning her body. In a candid TikTok post, she addressed the criticism women receive for undergoing cosmetic procedures:

“I’ve already had cosmetic enhancements since like 2021. Y’all really have to stop normalising making comments like these and just let women do whatever they want with their bodies.”

While she hasn’t disclosed exactly what work she’s had done, she made it clear that it’s no one else’s business. On a previous appearance on the We Said What We Said podcast, she put it plainly:

“We don’t have to lie, but we don’t have to scream it to the top of our lungs.”

Whether it’s through her style, sound, or stance on body autonomy, Doechii is walking her own path— sharp, confident, and unmistakably her.
