18 July 2025 – Director Matt Shakman has finally opened up about the behind-the-scenes changes that led to his departure from Star Trek 4, revealing that the project had shifted significantly before he officially stepped away in August 2022.
The WandaVision and Fantastic Four: First Steps director had initially been set to helm the fourth installment of the modern Star Trek saga, which was expected to reunite the core cast including Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock. But speaking with Variety, Shakman explained that while the film was in active pre-production, things took a sudden turn.
“We had stages, we had crew, we were moving ahead,” he said. “Then it changed dramatically. The stages went away, the crew was let go, and it didn’t have a start date anymore.”
With momentum slowing on Star Trek and production picking up speed on Marvel’s Fantastic Four, Shakman made the tough decision to step away from the sci-fi franchise.
Though he avoided revealing specifics about his original vision for the film, he noted that the core idea of the movie remained intact:
“I really hope they get a chance to make that movie.”
A Film in Limbo, But Still Alive
Since Shakman’s exit, updates on Star Trek 4 have been sparse, but Paramount has maintained the project is still in development—though a release date remains elusive.
Zoe Saldana, who portrayed Uhura across the rebooted Star Trek trilogy, recently expressed hope that she and the original cast might still return:
“I heard they’re gearing up to do a new one with a younger take… but they still hope to bring us veterans back for one last round. I’d be so grateful.”
Simon Pegg, who played Scotty, echoed a similar sentiment while reflecting on the loss of Anton Yelchin (Pavel Chekov), who died tragically in 2016:
“It’s been forever tainted because we lost Anton… If we do come back, I’d love to. It’s a group of guys I dearly love and don’t see very often.”
As fans wait for concrete news, the legacy of the rebooted Star Trek crew remains strong—and there’s still hope that their final voyage may one day make it to the big screen.
