Kanye West’s Chaotic Shanghai Show Sparks Fan Outrage and Refund Chants

Kanye West’s much-hyped return to the stage in Shanghai has sparked major backlash, with fans at the Shanghai Stadium chanting for refunds after the rapper arrived over 40 minutes late and delivered a set riddled with technical issues and lip syncing accusations.

A Disastrous Comeback Show

The 12 July 2025 concert marked Kanye’s first performance since September 2024, but instead of being a triumphant return, the night quickly unraveled into chaos. According to The Global Times, the rapper’s delayed entrance frustrated the 70,000-strong crowd, which soon erupted into chants demanding refunds.

One fan’s viral post on X (formerly Twitter) summed up the discontent:

“Mostly lip synching. His microphone must have been up less than 20% of the time.”

Another part of the backlash stemmed from the encore, where Kanye reportedly vanished for over 20 minutes as pre-recorded tracks played.

“I could have just played your music at home man. Came to see u perform????”

Fans Slam “Lack of Production”

Attendees also complained about the lack of visual effects and stage production, a stark contrast to the grand, immersive shows Kanye has been known for. While the rapper has often prided himself on his artistic presentation, this performance felt underwhelming for many — especially after months of silence and anticipation.

The Show Follows Serious Allegations

The controversy surrounding the Shanghai concert comes just days after new legal developments in a lawsuit filed against Kanye by former assistant Lauren Pisciotta, who has now added allegations of sexual assault and oral rape to her existing case.

In her amended complaint, Pisciotta accuses Kanye of:

• Forcibly groping and assaulting her on multiple occasions

• Forcing her to engage in non-consensual sexual acts

• Subjecting her to harassment and surveillance via third-party actors

• Locking her in a room and forcing her to watch him masturbate

The complaint describes deeply disturbing and graphic incidents from her time working with the rapper in 2021 and 2022. Kanye’s legal team has denied the allegations, calling them “baseless” and accusing Pisciotta of blackmail and extortion.

A Troubled Artist in Decline?

Kanye West — once a titan of the music and fashion worlds — has seen a dramatic fall from grace in recent years. His antisemitic remarks, erratic behavior, and a string of dropped endorsements have left his public image in tatters. The Shanghai concert was a potential opportunity for a fresh start — but the disastrous execution and ongoing legal controversies have only added to the growing skepticism surrounding his comeback.

Whether Kanye will address the Shanghai backlash or modify his future shows remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: fans are no longer willing to tolerate subpar performances, even from a once-iconic name.
