Soap fans, brace yourselves — beloved Emmerdale alum John Middleton is officially joining Hollyoaks, and he’s trading in his dog collar for something much darker.
The 77-year-old actor, best known for playing the kind-hearted vicar Ashley Thomas on Emmerdalefrom 1996 to 2017, is stepping into a dramatically different role. He’ll portray the father of notorious gangster Fraser Black — a villain whose criminal résumé includes murder, drug dealing, extortion, and human trafficking.
According to The Sun, Middleton’s new character is set to “rock the village” and reawaken chilling memories of his son’s callous crimes. Fraser Black was killed in a gripping whodunnit storyline back in 2014, with Freddie Roscoe, his stepson, revealed as the killer.
A Dark Turn for a Familiar Face
Fans accustomed to Middleton’s gentle, empathetic portrayal of Ashley Thomas will be in for a serious shock. A source close to the production teased:
“People usually think of Ashley when they see John, but that won’t be happening any more — Fraser is about as far away from the kindly vicar as you can get.”
They added:
“He’s possibly the most evil character Hollyoaks has ever had — and for a village plagued by serial killers, that’s saying something.”
Middleton’s arrival isn’t just a one-off guest appearance — his character is deeply tied into Hollyoaks’ twisted family web. He’s the grandfather of Clare Devine, Grace Black, and Rex Gallagher — and his first on-screen confrontation with Clare is being teased as “explosive.”
Timing That’s No Coincidence
Middleton’s casting comes as Hollyoaks ramps up to its 30th anniversary, and showrunner Hannah Cheers hinted that fans can expect fireworks.
“We’ve got two kind of Hollyoaks titans here,” Cheers said, referring to the return of Clare Devine and the arrival of Fraser Sr. “It’s not an accident that they are both in the show in the run up to the 30th anniversary.”
Clare is set to face off against serial killer Jez Blake, meaning viewers are in for a thrilling showdown between some of the show’s most iconic and unhinged characters.
