Veteran actor Larry Lamb has officially announced his retirement from acting, marking the end of a storied career that spans decades on stage and screen. The 77-year-old star revealed that the upcoming Gavin and Stacey finale will serve as his final major role, calling it the perfect way to bow out of the spotlight.
“You get so involved with these characters that they become your favourite at that time… but to finish up in my 70s playing a character like Mick who is beloved by millions of people, you have to give the writers credit,” Lamb told MailOnline. “At this stage in my career, Mick is the closest to my heart.”
A Legendary Career
While most audiences know Lamb for his roles as Archie Mitchell in EastEnders and Mick Shipman in Gavin and Stacey, his roots run deep in the theatre world.
“I have had a very fortunate career,” he reflected. “I’ve done so much that I am really proud of that maybe not so many people know. I worked at the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, did 12 West End shows, Broadway — I’ve been very lucky.”
He explained that many fans assumed his career was built solely on television, but in truth, he split his time evenly between the stage and screen for decades.
No Regrets, No Encore
Though Lamb isn’t ruling out a small stage role in the future, he’s ready to hand over the big parts to a new generation.
“Now I am quite happy to let someone else play the big roles,” he said, adding that the recognition he gained later in life — especially through Gavin and Stacey — felt like a reward.
“If you have been through a life in entertainment and people don’t all know you, to suddenly be known as a character that people really love… what a way to finish your working life.”
As fans prepare to say goodbye to Mick Shipman one last time in the Gavin and Stacey finale, they’ll also be saying goodbye to one of Britain’s most beloved actors — a man who has brought warmth, humour, and gravitas to generations of storytelling.
