Jeremy Renner Says Sheer Willpower and Love for Life Pulled Him Through Snowplough Ordeal

Jeremy Renner has opened up about the physical and mental battle he endured after his near-fatal snowplough accident in 2023 — and how sheer grit, love for his daughter, and a determination not to let others down helped him survive.

The Hawkeye star, now 54, was crushed by his 14,000-pound snowplough in January 2023 while trying to protect his nephew from harm, resulting in 38 broken bones and months of agonizing recovery. But according to Renner, it wasn’t just medicine that kept him alive — it was mindset.

“I was bullying my body into thinking it wasn’t that bad and my mind was overcoming the greatest odds it’s ever come up against,” Renner told The Guardian“My mind was saying, ‘Nah!’ — it’s part stubbornness. I didn’t want to lose this battle. But more than that, I had so much to live for.”

One of those driving forces? A group of people waiting for him to go skiing.

“I didn’t want to let them down. That became such a big thing,” he said.

Titanium and Tenacity

Renner was unable to walk for two months, and he still deals with the aftermath. He revealed that his leg from the knee down is now entirely titanium, and though his outward scars are minimal, his mouth remains in “complete chaos.”

“It looks fine,” he said, “but when I bite down it feels as if I’m going to break all my teeth.”

A New Kind of Fame

Beyond the physical healing, Renner says the accident altered how others interact with him — replacing the usual rush for selfies with something deeper.

“There’s a beautiful intimacy and openness and vulnerability and kindness I get from people now. They feel, ‘He’s a human just like I am.’”

A Shift in Purpose

The accident also gave Renner a renewed sense of purpose. While he’s returned to acting, his heart now lies in giving back, especially to vulnerable children. He’s been actively involved in charity work and sees that as more fulfilling than anything he’s done on screen.

“That’s where the accident really shifted my focus,” he said. “I can still go to work, but my primary focus is to give back and help in any way I can. That’s way more fulfilling than anything else I’ve done, outside of bringing up my own child.”

“Being able to put a smile on these kids’ faces, to share that joy and growth — I can’t think of anything more rewarding.”

Jeremy Renner’s survival story isn’t just about physical recovery — it’s about resilience, human connection, and rediscovering what really matters.
