Pedro Pascal is brushing off the age critics and embracing his new role in Fantastic Four: First Stepswith heart, soul, and a sense of purpose.
The 50-year-old actor, now stepping into the Marvel universe as Reed Richards a.k.a. Mr. Fantastic, has finally addressed online backlash from fans who claimed he was “too old” to play the iconic superhero. Speaking to AP News at a fan event in London, Pascal admitted that the comments did sting—but only to a point.
“Sometimes the outside will find you, no matter how much you try to protect yourself,” he said. “It just comes with the territory.”
While Pascal is known for his humility and quiet confidence, the weight of fan expectations for this beloved character clearly hasn’t escaped him.
“I think maybe my nerves were bigger than they usually are,” he shared. “I was a little more sensitive to the love that people have for stories like this. These characters wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for that love.”
Facing the Pressure, Giving It All
Playing Mr. Fantastic comes with high expectations—and Pascal is the first to admit the pressure is real.
“I think it’s very important for me that expectations be fulfilled. But I also know that the only way to do that is to give it all—my focus, my heart, my body, and my soul. That’s the best I can do.”
Despite the criticism, fans at the London event showed plenty of excitement and support, particularly after the first-look trailer dropped in February. The upcoming film, Fantastic Four: First Steps, set in a sleek period-style world similar to Captain America: The First Avenger, has rekindled hope for the franchise.
Turning 50, Thriving More Than Ever
Pascal, who also stars in The Last of Us, isn’t shying away from getting older—in fact, he’s leaning into it.
“It is the best time of my life,” he said with a smile. “Look around—it’s an incredible reflection of what I’m experiencing right now. I’m having a really amazing time.”
Fans Are (Mostly) On Board
While age critics had their say, much of the fan reaction has been overwhelmingly positive:
• “Okay, the Fantastic Four trailer wasn’t bad. I’m pleasantly surprised.”
• “I’m not even a Fantastic Four fan, but this looks really sleek.”
• “I’ve felt a little burnt out on superheroes, but F4 are my ride or die.”
Others praised the movie’s nostalgic tone and high-end cinematography, drawing comparisons to the early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
