In a stunning shakeup, Christian Horner has been sacked by Red Bull Racing, bringing an end to his two-decade reign as the team’s boss—just days after a disappointing run at the British Grand Prix.

The 51-year-old, who has led Red Bull’s Formula 1 outfit since its launch in 2005, was relieved of his duties on Wednesday morning, July 9, 2025, with immediate effect.

Red Bull managing director Oliver Mintzlaff confirmed the decision in an official statement, praising Horner’s legacy:

“We would like to thank Christian Horner for his exceptional work over the last 20 years… he has been instrumental in establishing Red Bull Racing as one of the most successful and attractive teams in Formula 1.”

Under Horner’s leadership, the team clinched six Constructors’ Championships and eight Drivers’ titles, transforming from F1 newcomers into motorsport titans with stars like Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen at the helm.

However, Horner’s final stretch was tainted by controversy, as he faced internal investigations last year over allegations of inappropriate behaviour toward a female colleague. Though he was cleared after a thorough inquiry, and an appeal was dismissed, the scandal cast a long shadow over his leadership.

Despite the off-track drama, Horner remained focused on performance, telling Sky Sports News at the time:

“I was relieved with the appeal concluding… It’s very much focus on track, as it has been all season.”

Red Bull’s recent form may have also played a role in the decision. At the British GP at Silverstone, Verstappen finished a modest fifth, with Horner blaming unexpected rain:

“Had the race been two hours later, it could have been a different outcome… but we should have been on the podium.”

Taking over the reins is Laurent Mekies, former Racing Bulls boss, now stepping in as CEO of Red Bull Racing.
