Get ready for a high-octane thrill ride—Hollywood style! Director Jon M. Chu, best known for Crazy Rich Asians and the upcoming Wicked, has officially signed on to direct the much-anticipated live-action Hot Wheels movie, in collaboration with Mattel Studios, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Bad Robot.
The 45-year-old filmmaker is revving up to bring the legendary die-cast car brand to the big screen, and fans are in for a cinematic joyride packed with speed, imagination, and adrenaline.
“Hot Wheels has always been about more than speed — it’s about imagination, connection, and the thrill of play,” Chu shared.
“Bringing that spirit to the big screen is an incredible opportunity.”
What to Expect: Speed Meets Storytelling
The Hot Wheels brand isn’t just a toy—it’s a cultural icon. And Jon M. Chu plans to do more than just burn rubber. According to Robbie Brenner, president of Mattel Studios:
“Jon’s ability to craft rich, elaborate worlds with a distinct point of view makes him the ideal storyteller. His films are true eye candy, but what sets them apart is the unforgettable narratives.”
Paired with the screenwriting duo Juel Taylor and Tony Rettenmaier, this new Hot Wheelsadventure promises to deliver both visual spectacle and heartfelt storytelling.
Warner Bros. Gives Chu the Green Light
Warner Bros. Pictures’ President of Development and Production, Jesse Ehrman, also praised the pick:
“Jon is a visionary director. We’re thrilled to have him, along with the brilliant writing duo and our partners at Mattel and Bad Robot. We can’t wait to bring Hot Wheels to life on the big screen.”
From Spielberg to Speed Machines
Chu has come a long way since his life-changing meeting with Steven Spielberg in his early 20s. The director recalled visiting Spielberg’s set:
“It was a masterclass… He gave me a seat next to him. I’m sharing candy with him, and watching how he stayed calm and creative through chaos — it changed everything for me.”
Now, with Hot Wheels, Chu is set to create his own movie magic, steering one of the world’s most beloved toy brands into uncharted cinematic territory.
