James Gunn Says His ‘Superman’ Is About More Than Capes — It’s About Kindness

James Gunn is putting heart back into heroism with his upcoming Superman reboot — and he’s not just talking super strength and laser vision. According to the director, this new take on the Man of Steel is all about one thing: basic human kindness.

The highly anticipated film, hitting cinemas on July 11, stars David Corenswet as Superman, alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as a menacing Lex Luthor. But while the action and fan-favorite characters are intact, Gunn insists the core message is surprisingly simple — and incredibly timely.

“Superman is the story of America,” Gunn told The Sunday Times.

“An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country … but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value — and is something we’ve lost.”

In a world full of social media rage and cultural division, Gunn says Superman’s goodness is more radical than ever.

“There’s a meanness online, even among cultural figures — and I include myself,” he admitted. “Millions of people having tantrums online. If I could press a button to make the internet disappear, I’d consider it.”

Gunn’s Superman isn’t just about saving the world — it’s about restoring hope. And while he’s not claiming to change the world with one film, he says, “If a few people could be just a bit nicer after this, it would make me happy.”

The story follows Superman as he juggles his dual identity — part Kryptonian god, part humble Earthling — while facing off against Lex Luthor’s latest sinister scheme. Along the way, the film introduces a fresh wave of DC heroes like Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion)Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi) — setting the stage for the next era of the DC Universe.

Still, leading man David Corenswet says he’s not looking too far ahead.

“I don’t think it’s up to me to answer what comes next,” he told Esquire España“That’s James Gunn’s call. I’m just here to bring his vision to life.”

With its heartfelt message and a new cast of iconic characters, Superman (2025) isn’t just another reboot — it’s a reminder that kindness might just be the ultimate superpower.
