Chelsea’s latest summer signing, Joao Pedro, has officially made the £60 million switch from Brighton & Hove Albion, and in a surprising twist, the 23-year-old has revealed that it was Andrey Santos, a relatively low-profile Chelsea player, who helped convince him to make the move.

Chelsea confirmed the signing on Wednesday, taking their summer spending beyond £200 million under new manager Enzo Maresca. Pedro joins an exciting group of young recruits, including Liam Delap, Estevao Willian, Dario Essugo, Mamadou Sarr, and Kendry Paez, as the Blues continue to reshape their squad for the future.

Pedro’s Path to the Bridge

Joao Pedro, a talented Brazilian forward, already has a solid English football résumé. After impressing at Watford, he stepped up at Brighton where he scored 30 goals and registered 10 assists over two seasons. His performances caught the attention of Chelsea’s recruitment team, who have made a habit of raiding Brighton in recent windows.

But while many expected top brass or former Chelsea legends to have influenced his decision, Pedro instead credited fellow Brazilian Andrey Santos, a player who has yet to make his mark at Stamford Bridge, as a key figure in his transfer.

“I was talking with Andrey [Santos] on Instagram,” Pedro revealed.

“I asked about the guys, about the club, and he said good things about the team, so it’s good to join.”

Santos, who signed for Chelsea in January 2023, has spent time on loan at Vasco da Gama, Nottingham Forest, and Strasbourg. His only appearance for Chelsea came at the FIFA Club World Cup, where he played 22 minutes against Esperance Tunis. Despite limited minutes, Santos still had enough insight into the club’s culture and dressing room vibe to reassure Pedro.

Pedro also shared that he spoke to David Luiz — a former Chelsea fan favourite and Brazilian icon — for broader career advice, though not specifically about the Chelsea move.

Club World Cup Ready

Joao Pedro is now eligible to feature in Chelsea’s next Club World Cup match against Palmeiras in the quarter-finals. The Blues reached this stage after edging Benfica in extra time during the Round of 16.

The club unveiled the signing with a stylish announcement video showing Pedro performing keepy-uppies on a beach, set to Brazilian jazz — capturing both flair and samba vibes. The message? “Welcome to Chelsea, Joao Pedro.”

A Bright Future Under Maresca

The São Paulo-born striker becomes a vital attacking piece for Enzo Maresca, who’s overseeing a Chelsea rebuild rooted in youth, skill, and long-term vision. Pedro’s signing reportedly includes an eight-year deal, reflecting the club’s continued trust in long-term development.

Speaking on the move, Pedro said:

“Everyone knows this is a big club with a great history. I’m excited to be part of this next chapter.”

With Premier League experience, Brazilian flair, and a growing reputation, Joao Pedro’s arrival adds depth and dynamism to Chelsea’s evolving attack — and marks another bold step in the club’s ambitious new era.
