The long-awaited Blade reboot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains stuck in development limbo—and now, even the franchise’s original writer is speaking out.
David S. Goyer, the screenwriter behind the original Wesley Snipes-led Blade trilogy, recently weighed in on the delays during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Like most fans, Goyer doesn’t understand why it’s taking Marvel so long to bring the Daywalker back to the big screen.
“I think Blade is a relatively simple story. It’s not complicated,” Goyer said. “The promise of Blade is that it should have insane ass-kicking, it should be pretty scary, might be R-rated, and it should not be complicated.”

Wesley Snipes’ Comeback May Have Complicated Things
Podcast host Josh Horowitz suggested that Wesley Snipes’ surprise appearance as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine may have unintentionally made things harder for the Mahershala Ali-led reboot. Goyer didn’t disagree, saying:
“It’s confusing if you’re trying to do another one. It may have been acknowledgment that we can’t crack it.”
Despite praising Snipes’ return, Goyer hinted that the reboot may be facing an identity crisis—especially after such a nostalgic multiverse moment.

Marvel first announced Mahershala Ali as the new Blade at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019. Since then? Just one off-screen voice cameo in 2021’s Eternals, where Ali’s voice is heard warning Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman. No suit, no action, no bloodsuckers—just delays.
Since 2019, the project has cycled through directors, writers, and script rewrites. It’s even been pulled from Marvel’s official release calendar. Still, according to Kevin Feige, Ali remains attached to the role.

Snipes’ return in Deadpool & Wolverine—set in a multiverse wasteland called “The Void”—was a fan-favorite surprise. In a cheeky scene, Deadpool talks about the many Punishers across timelines, and Snipes’ Blade replies:
“There’s only ever been one Blade. There’s only ever gonna be one Blade.”
Deadpool’s silent, fourth-wall-breaking smirk says it all.
