In a dramatic turn of events, the judge overseeing Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s ongoing legal feud has ruled in favor of Drake’s legal team, granting them access to key documents related to Kendrick’s deal with Universal Music Group (UMG).
The ruling, handed down by Judge Jeannette Vargas, allows Drake’s team to review 18 sets of documents, including:
• Contracts between UMG and Kendrick Lamar
• Communications regarding the release of “Not Like Us”
• Marketing discussions involving Interscope exec Ramon Alvarez-Smikle
• Detailed streaming and viewership data across all platforms
What’s at Stake?
Drake’s team hopes to uncover potential manipulation of streaming numbers, as fans have speculated that “Not Like Us” may have been artificially boosted—hence the nickname “Bot Like Us.”
Meanwhile, UMG had initially attempted to block discovery, calling Drake’s demands “overboard”and “premature.” However, their efforts to dismiss the case entirely without releasing documents have now been stalled.
A Win for Drake? Not So Fast.
While this is a legal victory for Drake’s team, it’s not an all-out win. Reports suggest that Drake’s attorneys may be removing five paragraphs from their complaint, allegedly due to a Rule 11 provision raised by UMG. Though unconfirmed, this could indicate that certain claims made by Drake’s side were unsustainable in court.
What’s Next?
With the discovery process now underway, all eyes are on what Drake’s team might uncover. If they prove that UMG manipulated streams, it could justify the lawsuit and shift public perception. However, if no major revelations emerge, Drake’s decision to sue over a rap battle could remain a source of ridicule.
