Top Yoruba Nollywood actress and producer, Mercy Aigbe, has opened up like never before, revealing the heartbreaking story behind the collapse of her first marriage. In a deeply emotional interview on the Iriri Mi programme via WasilaCoded TV, Mercy shared how family interference, especially from her ex-mother-in-law, pushed her out of her home at a very young age.
The movie star recounted that everything started smoothly after she graduated and got married, building dreams of a happy family. However, things took a dark turn when her then-husband’s mother became strongly opposed to their union — simply because of tribal differences. According to Mercy, her mother-in-law could not accept her because she wasn’t from the Igbo ethnic group, and this disapproval soon created chaos in her marital life.
“I became so frustrated that I moved out of my husband’s house with my child,” Mercy revealed, holding back tears. “The situation was too much for me because I was still young — about 23 or 24 years old. I was naive, and one day I realized if I didn’t run for my life, this woman might pressure me to the point of taking my own life. So, I left with my child.”
Mercy Aigbe shared how the emotional weight of raising a child alone, while battling rejection from her husband’s family, left her overwhelmed. The pain was worsened by her youthful age and the societal expectations placed on women, especially in the Nollywood industry, where public scrutiny can be relentless.
