“UMG Fights Back: Labels Drake’s Lawsuit Over Kendrick Lamar’s Diss Track a ‘Sore Loser’ Move”

The legal drama between Drake and Universal Music Group (UMG) is heating up, and it’s getting as intense as a rap battle. After Drake filed a defamation lawsuit over Kendrick Lamar’s viral diss track “Not Like Us,” UMG is now urging a federal judge to slam the brakes on the entire discovery process.

UMG’s Argument: ‘Enough is Enough’

UMG claims that Drake’s legal team is going overboard with their demands. From contracts between Lamar and the label to executive compensation details for Interscope CEO John Janick, the requests are being labeled “excessive” and a “burdensome fishing expedition.”

According to Variety, UMG insists they’re not responsible for the fallout from the track’s success. They argue that Drake’s demand for information on “executive bonuses” and “performance incentives”over the past five years is not only intrusive but also unnecessary.

Drake’s Side of the Story

Drake’s legal team, led by Michael Gottlieb from Willkie Farr & Gallagher, isn’t backing down. They’ve accused UMG of playing dirty by trying to hide the truth.

“It is unsurprising that UMG is desperate to avoid discovery,” Gottlieb stated. “This motion is a ploy to delay producing documents and communications that UMG hopes to keep hidden. If UMG has nothing to hide, it should not have an issue with discovery.”

Drake is determined to prove that UMG had a direct hand in amplifying “Not Like Us” and that their actions led to real-world consequences for the rapper.

UMG Fires Back: ‘Drake’s Just Bitter’

UMG’s legal rebuttal has been nothing short of savage. The label dismissed Drake’s lawsuit as a “sore loser” move, suggesting he’s just bitter about losing the rap battle. They argue that Kendrick’s disswas “nonactionable opinion and rhetorical hyperbole,” meaning it was all part of the game.

And to drive their point home, UMG called out Drake’s past support for free speech in the music industry. The rapper previously signed a petition defending artists’ rights to express themselves without facing legal consequences — a stance that now seems a little contradictory.

“Drake was right then, but he’s wrong now,” UMG’s legal team stated.

What’s Next?

While UMG pushes to halt discovery and dismiss the case entirely, Drake remains steadfast in his quest for answers. Whether the court sides with the rap mogul or the music giant remains to be seen.

For now, one thing is clear — this battle is far from over, and fans are getting a front-row seat to a legal showdown just as fierce as any rap beef.
