Nollywood actress and filmmaker Wumi Toriola has opened up about the struggles she faced before the massive success of her blockbuster film, Queen Lateefah.
The 2024 hit movie became one of the highest-grossing Nigerian films of the year, pulling in an impressive ₦350 million at the box office. However, in an interview with The Nation, Toriola revealed that the journey to bringing the film to life was far from easy.
A Four-Year Journey of Challenges
Toriola disclosed that she conceived the idea for Queen Lateefah four years ago, but various setbacks—including script revisions, production delays, and creative hurdles—prevented her from shooting it earlier.
“I would have shot Queen Lateefah four years ago, but it didn’t happen. I kept rewriting the story because I wasn’t completely satisfied. I faced disappointments, but I’ve learned that whenever you come out, just come out well. The place of preparation was helpful for me,” she explained.
A Record-Breaking Success
Despite the challenges, her patience and persistence paid off, with Queen Lateefah becoming a major box office sensation. The film’s strong storytelling and standout performances captivated audiences, earning Toriola the title of second highest-grossing Nollywood producer of 2024.
While she is thrilled by the movie’s success, she admitted that it also comes with pressure:
“It makes me feel great, but it also gives me a lot of responsibility because now, I have to surpass this achievement.”
