Veteran Nollywood actress Ayo Adesanya has bravely opened up about enduring 10 years of physical and emotional abuse in a toxic relationship.
In an emotional interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Adesanya revealed that the traumatic experience pushed her into alcohol addiction as she struggled to cope with the constant abuse from her ex-lover.
According to the actress, her ex-partner would beat her anywhere he found her, while manipulating people around her to believe she was unavailable for acting jobs.
“I Became an Alcoholic”
Speaking for the first time about her ordeal, Adesanya admitted that fear of public shame kept her in the relationship for years.
“I became an alcoholic. But I couldn’t leave because of the shame… that people would say I couldn’t keep a man,” she shared.
Despite attempts by friends like Bimbo Akintola to rescue her, Adesanya felt trapped by society’s pressure to maintain the relationship.
Life-Threatening Abuse
The actress further recounted how her ex once threatened to pluck out her eyes with a knife and even sent their one-year-old son away out of jealousy.
She said:
“The guy beats you right now and the next minute he’s begging you… I was involved in it for 10 good years. Thank God there was no blogger then.”
Freedom at Midnight
Adesanya revealed that the night she finally escaped felt like magic as she sneaked out of the house around midnight without looking back.
“This is the first time I’ll be talking about it… but I have to talk about it,” she added.
Fans Applaud Her Courage
Following the interview, many fans and colleagues have praised Adesanya for speaking up and inspiring other women facing domestic violence.
Her story is a powerful reminder that no one deserves to stay in an abusive relationship — regardless of society’s expectations.
