Marvel Comics has officially announced the upcoming death of Thor Odinson, set to unfold in Immortal Thor #23 this May. The issue marks the beginning of a three-part saga titled “Godwar”, which will see the God of Thunder face his final battle against Kemur, a monstrous force of pure violence.

What This Means for Immortal Thor

Despite Thor’s impending demise, Marvel has hinted that the series itself will continue beyond his death. This could mean exploring Thor’s journey through Valhalla or shifting focus to his resurrected son Magni, who may inherit the mantle of Thunder.

Al Ewing’s Immortal Thor run has been building up to this moment, weaving in prophecies and warnings of Thor’s doom. The series has also introduced the Utgard-Gods, cosmic beings even older and more powerful than Asgardians, setting the stage for an epic conclusion.

Thor’s Long History of Deaths in Marvel Comics

Thor’s upcoming fall is not the first time Marvel has killed off the character. Some of his most notable deaths include:

• Fear Itself (2011): Thor dies fighting Jörmungandr, the World Serpent.

• Thor: Disassembled (2004): Thor destroys Yggdrasil, sacrificing himself to prevent universal collapse.

• King Thor (2019): An elderly Thor sacrifices himself to stop entropy, leaving his granddaughters to carry on his legacy.

As history has shown, death is rarely the end for Thor, but Immortal Thor #23 may deliver one of his most significant and permanent deaths yet.

How This Could Impact the MCU

While Thor’s fate in the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains unclear, the comic storyline could influence future films. Chris Hemsworth’s last appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) received mixed reviews, and the actor himself admitted the film may have leaned too much into comedy. With no confirmed plans for Thor 5, could Marvel Studios take inspiration from Immortal Thor and give the MCU’s Thor a dramatic sendoff?

Fans will have to wait and see how the comic reshapes Thor’s future, both on the page and potentially on the big screen.

Immortal Thor #23 will be available in comic shops on May 14, 2025, featuring a cover by Alex Ross.
