Renowned Malian filmmaker Souleymane Cissé, a trailblazer of African cinema, has passed away at age 84, leaving behind a rich cinematic legacy that spanned over half a century.
His daughter, Mariam Cissé, confirmed the news, stating, “Papa died today in Bamako. We are all in shock. He dedicated all his life to his country, to cinema, and to art.”
A Pioneer in African Storytelling
Cissé gained international recognition after winning the Jury Prize at the 1987 Cannes Film Festivalfor his masterpiece, “Yeelen” (“Brightness”)—a film deeply rooted in West African Bambara legends.
In 2023, Cannes once again honored him with the Carrosse d’Or, an award given to directors who have profoundly impacted the world of cinema with bold storytelling and artistic excellence.
His influence stretched far beyond individual accolades. He was one of only two filmmakers to have twice won the grand prize at FESPACO, Africa’s most prestigious film festival.
A Lasting Call for African Cinema
Even on the day of his passing, Cissé remained committed to the growth of African film. He urged Mali’s military-led government to invest in cinema infrastructure, stating,
“It is not enough to make cinema; the works must also be visible. May the authorities help us with the construction of cinemas.”
Cissé was scheduled to head the jury for the 29th edition of FESPACO’s feature film category in Burkina Faso. Sadly, he passed away just a day before his planned departure.
A Legacy That Lives On
Tributes have poured in from across the film industry, with fellow Malian director Boubacar Sidibecalling it a day of mourning for African cinema. Mali’s Minister of Culture, Mamou Daffé, also described him as a monument of African filmmaking.
The Film at Lincoln Center in the U.S. praised him as “one of cinema’s greats”, noting how his work catapulted African film to the world stage.
Though Cissé is gone, his influence on African storytelling, cultural preservation, and cinematic excellence will remain immortal.
