Drama is unfolding in South Africa as Anabela Rungo, the mother of Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina, has been arrested for allegedly fraudulently obtaining a South African identity document.
The Arrest
South African authorities, in a joint operation with the Department of Home Affairs and police, tracked Rungo down at a hideout in Cape Town. Reports reveal that her residency status had been under scrutiny for months, with officials declaring her persona non grata in September 2024 after discovering irregularities in her documents.
Department spokesperson Siya Qoza confirmed the arrest, stating:
“The Department withdrew Rungo’s South African documentation in September 2024 after finding that it had been fraudulently obtained, rendering her ineligible to continue residing in South Africa.”
The Miss SA Controversy
Rungo’s immigration issues first came to light when her daughter, Chidimma Adetshina, participated in the Miss South Africa beauty pageant. Investigations later revealed that Adetshina was not a South African citizen, making her ineligible to compete. Following this revelation, she withdrew from the competition and later won Miss Universe Nigeria, ultimately finishing as the first runner-up at Miss Universe 2024 in Mexico.
What Happens Next?
Authorities say Rungo deliberately defied her “undesirable” status by re-entering South Africa using a Mozambican passport. She will now face further legal action, as her case has been handed over to SAPS and the Hawks for further investigation.
At the time of her arrest, Rungo was reportedly with a minor child, prompting social services to step in to ensure the child’s welfare.
With an ongoing fraud investigation, this situation is far from over. Will Rungo face deportation? And how will this affect Chidimma Adetshina’s rising career? Stay tuned for updates!
