A disturbing case of workplace abuse has emerged from Breeze 91.9 FM in Akure, Ondo State, where the acting chairman, Tokunbo Opebi, has been accused of physically assaulting a female staff member, Mercy Okafor, for resigning from her job.

According to sources, Okafor, a former NYSC corps member who later secured employment at the station, was violently attacked on Tuesday after submitting her resignation letter. Witnesses allege that Opebi, angered by her decision to leave, removed his shoe and struck her in the head before unleashing a series of punches. It took the intervention of colleagues to rescue her from the assault.

Toxic Work Environment & Exploitation

The shocking incident sheds light on the toxic workplace culture at Breeze FM, where employees reportedly endure delayed salaries, low wages, and threats for resigning. Insiders reveal that some On-Air Personalities (OAPs) earn as little as ₦25,000 per month, while temporary staff receive just ₦10,000, both of which violate Nigeria’s Minimum Wage Act. Despite these poor conditions, payments are often irregular, with some workers still owed December salaries as of February 2025.

Former employees describe a climate of fear, where staff members who attempt to leave face false accusations, detainment, or withheld salaries. The report alleges that Opebi has a track record of using intimidation tactics, including previous cases where ex-staff members were arrested on trumped-up charges.

Justice Must Prevail

Following the assault, Okafor sustained internal injuries and has been taken to her hometown in Ile-Ife for further treatment. Her mother and relatives are demanding justice for the brutal attack.

This incident raises urgent concerns about workers’ rights in Nigeria’s media industry. Regulatory bodies, labor unions, and law enforcement authorities must take immediate action to investigate the case and hold those responsible accountable. No employer should have the power to physically attack, exploit, or intimidate their employees without consequences.
