The 2025 box office is finally getting a much-needed boost, thanks to Dog Man, which is on track to post the biggest opening for a new release this year! According to Deadline, the animated adventure is expected to rake in over $20 million in its opening weekend, surpassing 2025’s previous box office hits.
“Dog Man” Outshines the Competition
To put things in perspective, Mel Gibson’s Flight Risk debuted at $11.5 million, while action-packed sequel Den of Thieves 2: Pantera pulled in $15 million. Even horror flick Wolf Man struggled with a $10.8 million opening. Dog Man is already set to outperform them all, proving that family-friendly films still have serious box office power.
Meanwhile, this weekend’s other new release, Companion, a horror thriller, isn’t expected to pose much of a challenge. Industry experts predict it will earn between $8-10 million, leaving Dog Man as the undisputed champ.
“Dog Man” Brings a Beloved Comic to Life
Based on Dav Pilkey’s wildly popular comic series, Dog Man has been in the works since 2020. It wasn’t until last year that Universal officially announced the project, locking in a January 2025 release date. As seen in the Dog Man trailer, the movie follows the adventures of the crime-fighting dog/human hybrid, who takes on his arch-nemesis, Petey the Cat.
The Right Movie at the Right Time
So far, the 2025 box office has been dominated by holdovers from last year’s holiday season. Mufasa: The Lion King managed to recover from a weak start, winning two weekends in January. Meanwhile, Moana 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 capitalized on the lack of competition to cross major box office milestones.
With no major family-friendly releases in the immediate lineup, Dog Man is filling a perfect gap in the schedule. If projections hold, it could perform similarly to 2017’s Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, which opened to $23.8 million. And if it lands on the higher end of predictions, it might even surpass that number!
What’s Next? Bigger Box Office Titans on the Way
Of course, Dog Man’s reign won’t last forever. While next week’s rom-com Love Hurts isn’t expected to shake things up, the real box office juggernaut arrives in February. Captain America: Brave New World is set to open with a massive $90 million+ debut, easily taking the crown.
But for now, Dog Man is the hero the 2025 box office needs. Universal made a smart movereleasing it in this window, and audiences are more than ready for a fun, family-friendly hit.
