Maduka Okoye, the Super Eagles goalkeeper and Udinese player, is at the center of an alleged betting scandal in Italy, as reported by Messagero Veneto. The investigation, led by the Udine prosecutor’s office, concerns “anomalous bets” placed during Udinese’s match against Lazio on March 11, 2024.

The controversy began when Snai, a prominent betting company, flagged suspicious activities on its platform. A significant number of bets were reportedly placed on Okoye to receive a yellow card during the game. In the 64th minute, the goalkeeper was cautioned for time-wasting, further fueling suspicions as Udinese secured a 2-1 victory.

Another individual implicated in the case is Diego Giordano, a 40-year-old pizzeria owner in Udine. Giordano’s establishment is a popular spot among Udinese players and staff, raising questions about potential connections between him and Okoye.

Prosecutors are examining their relationship and investigating whether there was a coordinated effort to exploit the betting market. This includes analyzing mobile phone communications between the suspects and conducting searches of properties linked to them for evidence such as gambling receipts.

If found guilty, Okoye could face severe sanctions, ranging from a seven-month suspension to a four-year ban, depending on the level of involvement and the gravity of the offenses.

This case adds to the growing scrutiny on betting-related controversies in football, as authorities continue to crack down on irregularities that threaten the integrity of the sport.
