Hollywood veteran Mel Gibson has revealed that the Malibu home he called his sanctuary for over 14 years was destroyed in the recent Los Angeles wildfires. In a candid interview on NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas Reports, the Mad Max actor shared the emotional weight of losing his home and possessions but managed to find a silver lining amid the ashes.
“Obviously, it’s kind of devastating. It’s emotional,” Gibson admitted during the phone interview. “You live there for a long time, and you have all your stuff. Remember George Carlin’s bit about ‘stuff’? Well, I had my stuff there—and now, I’ve been relieved from the burden of my stuff because it’s all in cinders.”
At the time of the fire, Gibson was in Austin, Texas, recording an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience. Reflecting on his unease during the podcast session, he recalled, “I knew my neighborhood was on fire, so I thought, ‘I wonder if my place is still there.’ Sure enough, when I got home, it wasn’t. But hey, no more pesky plumbing problems, right?”
Gibson confirmed that his wife, Rosalind Ross, and their son, Lars, were safe, having evacuated before the flames engulfed their home. Sadly, his neighbor and fellow actor Ed Harris also lost his property to the fire. Despite the devastation, Gibson shared a surprising piece of good news: his chickens survived the inferno.
When pressed about his losses, the Braveheart star revealed that it wasn’t just the structure of the home but also the personal mementos that hit hardest. “I had a lot of personal things—photographs, files, clothing—stuff I’ve collected over the years. But these are just things. What truly matters is that my family and loved ones are safe, happy, and healthy. That’s all I can care about, really.”
Though heartbroken, Gibson’s resilience and humor shone through as he looked forward. “It’s tough, but you move on,” he concluded. For Gibson, the fire may have claimed his home, but it left behind a poignant reminder of what truly matters: the safety and well-being of loved ones.
