Graham Potter has been appointed as West Ham’s new manager, signing a two-and-a-half-year contract after Julen Lopetegui’s sacking earlier this week. The 49-year-old, who has been out of a managerial role since his dismissal from Chelsea in April 2023, expressed excitement about taking on the “big challenge” at the London club.
“It’s a proud day to be head coach of this amazing club,” Potter said, emphasizing West Ham’s strong tradition and passionate fanbase. “Big history, big expectations, big challenge,” he added. Potter also noted how he felt like it was “Christmas for adults,” eager to meet the players and supporters and get to work.
West Ham sits 14th in the Premier League, seven points above the relegation zone, with just six league wins. Potter’s task will be to improve the team’s performance and build a squad that resonates with the club’s loyal fanbase. He acknowledged that building a team with trust and connection between players and supporters is the key to success.
Potter’s experience includes successful spells at Ostersunds FK and Swansea City, as well as an impactful period at Brighton. His time at Chelsea, however, was less successful, leading to his sacking after just seven months in charge. Despite the challenges, Potter believes he’s grown as both a person and coach from the experience. “I’m comfortable with who I am,” he said, adding that every day in professional sport is about proving yourself.
Potter’s first match in charge will be the FA Cup third-round tie at Aston Villa on Friday, followed by a Premier League clash at home to Fulham. Joining him on his backroom staff are Narcis Pelach as first-team coach, Bruno Saltor as assistant coach, and Billy Reid as first-team coach. The new chapter at West Ham could mark the beginning of a promising tenure for Potter, with the Hammers hoping for a fresh start under his guidance.
