Nigerian actress Iyabo Ojo has expressed regret over her involvement in the exhumation of late singer Mohbad’s body, a decision she initially believed would uncover the truth behind his untimely death. Mohbad, who passed away on September 12, 2023, was buried the following day. However, his remains were exhumed on September 21, 2023, at the request of the police for an autopsy.
Despite these efforts, the autopsy yielded inconclusive results due to decomposition. In May 2024, the pathologist revealed that the cause of death couldn’t be determined. A toxicology report later found traces of Diphenhydramine, an antihistamine, in Mohbad’s system, but the concentration was not lethal.
Speaking with her colleague Biola Bayo, Ojo revealed her deep frustration over the delays and controversies that followed the exhumation, including disputes within Mohbad’s family. She shared:
“If I knew Mohbad’s case would turn out this way, I wouldn’t have requested that he be exhumed. He hasn’t been buried till now. The dad says he wants a DNA test done, and I hear the court has granted that now, but the dad has conditions again.”
Ojo explained her intention was solely to ensure justice by determining the cause of the singer’s death. However, the process was overshadowed by family conflicts and shifting priorities, particularly regarding DNA testing.
“I did my best to make sure everyone was investigated, but when they came up with different theories, DNA became their target and was more important,” she lamented.
The situation took a dramatic turn when Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, refused to rebury his son until a DNA test was conducted on Liam, Mohbad’s child. In October 2023, he also called for an investigation into Mohbad’s wife, Omowunmi, accusing her of complicity in the singer’s death.
Wunmi eventually agreed to the DNA test but requested it be conducted at three different hospitals. She also accused her father-in-law of harassment and attempting to claim Mohbad’s properties.
While Iyabo Ojo remains steadfast in her advocacy for justice, she acknowledges the toll the prolonged process has taken on the case’s progress. Her regret underscores the complexities of seeking justice amidst a storm of personal and legal disputes.
