Viewers of Good Morning Britain were left outraged during Thursday’s episode after host Adil Ray made comments about 17-year-old darts sensation Luke Littler’s appearance and lifestyle, with many accusing him of “fat-shaming.”
Adil, discussing Luke’s rising darts career, expressed concern for the teenager’s health, saying:
“I have to say, and this might not be very popular, I’m a little bit worried about Luke. He’s 17 and he’s turning into the look of a darts player.”
Co-host Sean Fletcher offered an awkward laugh while Kate Garraway questioned the basis of Adil’s concerns, especially given Luke’s impressive success. Adil, however, doubled down, pointing out the player’s preference for pizza before matches and his love of computer games.
Kate attempted to lighten the mood by suggesting they deliver a carrot to Luke as a snack. Adil replied:
“Just before the final, I’ve brought a nice little salad for you from Pret.”
Despite Adil wrapping up the segment by praising Luke’s talent, viewers were far from impressed. Social media quickly lit up with criticism, with one viewer slamming the remarks as inappropriate:
“Adil trying to fat shame Luke Littler is not the best thing this morning.”
Another user demanded action from broadcasting regulators:
“@Ofcom should investigate this shocking behaviour.”
Calls for accountability continued to pour in, with tweets demanding Adil issue a public apology:
“@GMB please ditch Adil Ray! His derogatory comments about Luke Littler were unacceptable.”
Amid the backlash, some noted that the discussion perpetuated harmful stereotypes and was especially damaging given Luke’s age.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV from 6 a.m. However, for many fans, Thursday’s episode left a sour taste, with demands for reflection and reform in handling such sensitive topics on live TV.
