Beyoncé just proved that patience pays off! The Queen Bey has officially won the legal rights to trademark her 12-year-old daughter Blue Ivy’s name after a staggering 12-year battle. According to The Trademark Official Gazette, this long-awaited win came after facing off with a Wisconsin boutique that had held the rights to “Blue Ivy” since 2009.
It all began in 2012, shortly after Beyoncé and Jay-Z welcomed their first child. The superstar couple sought to trademark Blue Ivy’s name, not to cash in, but to stop others from profiting off it. But things got messy when wedding planner Veronica Morales, owner of Blue Ivy Events, pushed back, claiming she had been using the name for years.
In 2020, a tribunal ruled in Beyoncé’s favor, stating that Morales’ business and Blue Ivy’s name weren’t similar enough to cause confusion. Even with that victory, Beyoncé’s team didn’t finalize the trademark then, leaving the fight hanging. Fast forward to November 2023, and Beyoncé reignited her claim, only to face a new obstacle—a Wisconsin boutique with rights to the “Blue Ivy” logo. But when the boutique didn’t contest, the stage was set for Beyoncé to seal the deal.
Now, if no one objects by January 30, Beyoncé’s team will receive a Notice of Allowance, officially locking in the trademark for Blue Ivy’s name.
Why all this effort? Back in 2013, Jay-Z explained the reason behind it all: “People wanted to make products based on our child’s name, and you don’t want anybody trying to benefit off your baby’s name.” Spoken like a true dad protecting his legacy.
