Filmmaker Bolanle Austen-Peters’ highly acclaimed play, Dear Kaffi, has made its return to the Terra Kulture Arena in Lagos, delighting audiences once again. The play, which resumed performances on December 26, will run daily until January 5, 2025, offering theatre lovers an unforgettable experience as they usher in the new year.
Dear Kaffi follows the story of Kikelomo Olota, a 35-year-old single woman navigating the complexities of love, life, and societal expectations in Lagos. A brilliant student throughout her youth, Kike finds herself separated from the social scene due to her lack of romantic relationships. In an attempt to fit in, she sacrifices her intelligence for popularity, only to find herself entangled in a series of misguided love affairs. The play delves into Kike’s struggle to balance her desires with societal pressures, challenging her to confront her insecurities and reevaluate what truly matters in her life.
Boasting a stellar cast, Dear Kaffi features performances from Bimbo Manuel, Uzo Osimkpa, Yewande Osamein, Abiola Lepe, Sharon Adaeze, Ralph Okoro, Nonzo Bassey, Hector Amiwero, Floyd Igbo, and Bukola Ogunnote. The creative team includes Ikenna Jude Okpala as stage manager, and Kehinde Oretimehin and Deji Aremu as music directors.
Joseph Umoibom, co-producer of the play, describes it as “a perfect companion to lead theatre lovers into a promising new year.” He expressed the excitement around the play’s success at the Lagos International Theatre Festival, where it received rave reviews from audiences. Austen-Peters, the force behind the annual festival, shared her joy at seeing the play thrive during the holiday season, calling it a highlight of Lagos’ vibrant yuletide atmosphere.
