Johnny Depp’s Lawyers Reveal Key Concern During Amber Heard Trial

The high-profile courtroom drama between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard remains etched in public memory, and Depp’s legal team recently shed light on their strategy and concerns during the trial.

The legal battle erupted after Heard’s 2018 Washington Post op-ed implied Depp was an abuser, without naming him explicitly. Depp sued for defamation, claiming the article caused irreparable harm to his career, while Heard counter-sued for $100 million. The trial, marked by intense media scrutiny, concluded with a jury awarding Depp $10.35 million in damages and Heard $2 million in her countersuit.

On the show Interrogation Raw: Celebrity Under Oath, Depp’s attorneys Benjamin Chew and Jessica Meyers discussed their approach to the trial. Chew revealed how Depp’s sense of humor became a powerful tool during cross-examinations.

“Johnny’s use of humor really undermined whatever serious point Amber’s counsel was trying to make,” Chew shared, adding, “We wanted to humanize Johnny before the jury so they could understand why hitting the woman he loved was something that he’s just not capable of.”

However, the team had one pressing concern: Depp’s temper. “The other side was going to do everything possible to provoke Johnny into losing his cool,” Chew explained. Despite the pressure, Depp maintained composure, ensuring Heard’s lawyer, Ben Rottenborn, couldn’t wrest control during cross-examinations.

While Depp’s legal team reflected on their successful strategy, Heard’s lawyer Elaine Charlson Bredehoft criticized the decision to televise the trial, calling it a mistake. “You should never have cameras in a courtroom for sexual assault or domestic violence cases,” she told People.

The saga ended in late 2022 when both parties settled outstanding legal matters, but the trial’s cultural impact and legal debates around publicized cases continue to be discussed.
