Singer and media personality Yeni Kuti has shared her thoughts on actress Ngozi Ezeonu’s recent criticism of aspiring actresses who dress “inappropriately” at auditions. The controversy began after Ezeonu, in a statement reported by Vanguard, condemned candidates who show up braless, vowing to disqualify such individuals. “How can you come to an audition ground without a bra?” the veteran actress questioned.
Addressing the topic on an episode of Your View on TVC, Yeni Kuti, daughter of the late Afrobeat icon Fela Kuti, took a more understanding stance. She argued that public criticism was unnecessary and suggested that if someone’s attire didn’t meet professional standards, they could simply be rejected without creating a spectacle.
Yeni reflected on the generational gap in societal expectations, sharing her own experiences: “At 24, I had a flat tummy. If I wore something similar [to what’s being criticized now] back then, no one would bat an eye. But if I wear it now, people would say, ‘Aunty, what’s wrong that you are showing this your belle?’” She highlighted the double standards imposed by older generations and the need to adapt to evolving norms.
Urging for empathy, Yeni added, “The country is hot, and these ones do not want to sweat.” She pointed out that younger individuals often prioritize comfort over adhering to rigid traditional expectations.
The conversation has sparked wider debates about personal freedoms, societal standards, and the generational divide, with many applauding Yeni Kuti’s call for understanding and acceptance.
