‘Wonder Man’ Renewed for Season 2 as Marvel Bets Big on Hit Comedy Series

Marvel has officially ordered more “Wonder Man.” The Disney+ series, which debuted in January to critical acclaim, has been renewed for a second season, making it only the third live-action Marvel series to earn a follow-up.

The renewal announcement came Monday, with Marvel confirming that stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley will return as Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery, respectively. Co-creators Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest are also back, with Guest resuming showrunner duties and Cretton returning as director and executive producer.

The Marvel series renewal places “Wonder Man” in an exclusive club. Only two other live-action Marvel shows have received second seasons: “Loki,” which ran for two seasons, and “Daredevil: Born Again,” whose second season premieres March 25. Other acclaimed series like “WandaVision” and “Agatha All Along” were developed as standalone projects, though they share interconnected narratives.

The renewal comes after months of uncertainty. The series was delayed multiple times due to the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes, and production faced hurdles as Marvel recalibrated its television strategy. As Guest noted earlier this year, the show survived cancellation “by the skin of our teeth” on more than one occasion.

Unlike traditional Marvel fare, “Wonder Man” eschews world-ending stakes for something smaller: a Hollywood satire about a struggling actor trying to make it in an industry that bans superpowered performers. Simon Williams (Abdul-Mateen II) hides his ionic abilities while auditioning for a remake of his childhood favorite superhero film, a project that brings him into the orbit of Trevor Slattery (Kingsley), the washed-up actor last seen in “Iron Man 3” and “Shang-Chi”.

The eight-episode first season debuted January 27 under Marvel’s “Spotlight” banner, which signals standalone stories less reliant on broader MCU continuity . The approach worked. The series holds a 91% critic score and 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Nielsen reported 618 million minutes watched in its first week, landing it in the top 10 original streaming series.

Season 1 ended with Simon finally achieving stardom, and Trevor taking the fall for the chaos his friend’s powers caused. But the finale’s final moments saw Simon using his fully evolved abilities to break Trevor out of prison, leaving their futures wide open.

“If we get a Season 2, my promise is to get Josh Gad out of Door Man, and back into the world,” Guest teased in a January interview, referencing the season’s wildest twist.

The renewal signals Marvel’s confidence in a more character-driven, comedic approach to television. Cretton, who directed “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” is currently directing “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” set for release July 31. Abdul-Mateen II will next star in Netflix’s “Man on Fire,” premiering April 30.

A release window for “Wonder Man” Season 2 has not been announced. For now, fans can revisit all eight episodes of Season 1 streaming on Disney+.
