Tyla Breaks Down Over Pop Pressure – But Comes Back Stronger Than Ever

South African music sensation Tyla has revealed that she was once reduced to tears after being pressured to make pop music that didn’t feel like her. The Water hitmaker, whose 2023 smash went viral around the globe, admitted that the push to conform to a sound that wasn’t authentic left her questioning everything.

Speaking to Variety, the 23-year-old recalled a low moment in her hotel room when her managers insisted she record a track she didn’t connect with. “They were calling me, saying, ‘Come down, we need to cut the song.’ I was crying, thinking, ‘This is not what I want. I didn’t get signed to do this.’” Eventually coaxed out, the experience only deepened her passion for African music. “It made me more persistent in keeping my ideas,” she said.

Tyla explained that the creative freedom she felt recording Water—just her, an engineer, and his pregnant wife in the studio—was worlds apart from the pressure she later faced. “I used to be so shy,” she admitted, but success changed everything.

After Water blew up, Tyla confessed to feeling “trapped” under the weight of perfection. “The world was looking, and it was stressful,” she told The Sun. But her recently released debut mixtape, We Wanna Party, has given her room to experiment and share her summer-ready tracks with fans.

“I didn’t plan this mixtape—it just happened. I was making music for my album, but I had too many good songs that felt perfect for summer. I couldn’t keep them to myself,” she said.

Through it all, Tyla has held onto a key trait she believes has kept her going: confidence—some might even call it arrogance. “Everyone needs a little bit of arrogance, especially in this industry,” she said. “If you don’t believe in your music as strongly as you should, why would someone else?”

From tears in a hotel room to dancing her way through summer with a mixtape, Tyla’s journey proves that staying true to yourself is the ultimate power move.
