Controversial Nigerian rapper Speed Darlington has taken legal action against the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, seeking ₦300 million in damages for alleged unlawful detention.

The rapper’s arrest followed his remarks about fellow artist Burna Boy, which led to accusations of defamation and cyberstalking. While Speed Darlington was granted bail by the Federal High Court in Abuja on December 23, 2024, he claimed he remained in police custody despite the court’s ruling.

Darlington’s lawyer, Abubakar Marshal, accused Burna Boy of using his influence to prolong the rapper’s detention, alleging the singer paid the police to keep his client behind bars. On January 6, 2025, the court ordered Darlington’s immediate release, sparking a new wave of legal action from the rapper.

Hours after his release, Speed Darlington filed a fundamental rights enforcement suit against the police, demanding ₦300 million in compensation for the alleged violation of his rights.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled the hearing for January 13, 2025, following a request by police lawyer Garba Audu for additional time to review the case.

The unfolding legal battle has drawn widespread attention, with many awaiting the court’s verdict on Darlington’s claim of police misconduct.
