The sports world is mourning after former Syracuse quarterback dies in a tragic accident over the weekend. Rex Culpepper death was confirmed Monday by Syracuse Athletics and his fiancée, Savanna Morgan, sending shockwaves through the college football community. He was 28 years old.

Culpepper suffered fatal injuries in a dirt bike accident in Georgia on Saturday. The Tampa native played for the Orange from 2016 to 2020, appearing in 30 games and throwing for 1,546 yards with 11 touchdowns. His journey was defined not just by his play on the field, but by an extraordinary battle off it.

In March 2018, Culpepper was diagnosed with testicular cancer at just 20 years old. What happened next became Syracuse legend. While undergoing chemotherapy, he insisted on participating in the team’s spring game. Entering on the final drive, he led his offense to a touchdown, throwing passes while poison dripped through his veins to kill the cancer.

By June 2018, after approximately 100 hours of chemotherapy, Culpepper was declared cancer-free. When doctors finally removed his PICC line, he later described hugging his mother in the hallway, both of them crying. “It felt like beating Clemson,” he said of that moment. Syracuse honored him with the Jim DaRin Courage Award.

Culpepper came from gridiron royalty. His father, Brad Culpepper, played nine NFL seasons as a defensive tackle for the Minnesota Vikings, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Chicago Bears. His brother Judge also played college football at Penn State and Toledo before a brief NFL stint.

At Tampa’s Plant High School, Rex was a two-time captain and ranked among Florida’s top quarterback prospects, throwing for over 2,100 yards and 21 touchdowns. He remained a team player at Syracuse, briefly switching to tight end in 2018 before returning to quarterback for his final two seasons.

After graduating, Culpepper earned a master’s degree in 2021 and then a law degree from Stetson University. He passed the Florida bar in 2024 and was practicing as an attorney. Just last month, he proposed to Savanna Morgan, his girlfriend of six years.

Morgan’s tribute captured their bond perfectly. “No one expects to meet the love of your life and lose them in only six short years,” she wrote. “Rex didn’t always believe in soulmates, but toward the end he realized what it truly meant to feel intertwined with someone. We lived every single day like it was our last.”

Former Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey added simply: “Rip Rexy. A man who embodied fearlessness and lived life with unmatched intensity.”

The Syracuse football program posted: “Rex lived his life with endless passion… He played football as fiercely as he loved life.” A young man who beat cancer, became a lawyer, found love, and lived without fear, gone in an instant at 28.
