Princess Charlotte may only be 10, but she’s already making royal history — and showing her football passion — after England’s Lionesses clinched victory at the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 final.

The young royal joined her father, Prince William, at the St. Jakob-Park Stadium in Basel, Switzerland on Sunday night (27 July), where the Lionesses beat Spain in a nail-biting penalty shootout. Beaming with excitement, Charlotte cheered animatedly from the royal box throughout the match.

But it was after the final whistle that she made a milestone move: Princess Charlotte signed off on her very first personalized social media message — a joint statement with her father posted to the Prince and Princess of Wales’ official channels.

“What a game! Lionesses, you are the champions of Europe. We couldn’t be prouder of the whole team. Enjoy this moment England.

W and Charlotte.”

It marks a significant royal first for Charlotte, showing her growing public presence as the next generation of royals steps into the spotlight.

King Charles, PM Starmer, and the Nation Celebrate

King Charles III praised the Lionesses’ achievement in a heartfelt statement, applauding their “sporting skill and awesome teamwork” while recalling the famous football chant “Football’s coming home.”

“For more years than I care to remember, England fans have sung that famous chant.

As you return home with the trophy you won at Wembley three years ago, it is a source of great pride that you’ve made those words ring true.”

“More than that, though, you’ve shown through your example that there are no setbacks so tough that defeat cannot be transformed into victory.

Well done, Lionesses.”

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who attended the match in Basel, hailed the team as “history makers” in a jubilant message on X (formerly Twitter):

“Champions! What a team. What a game. What drama.

You’ve made the nation proud.”

Celebrations Planned: Open-Top Bus Tour & Palace Ceremony

The Lionesses’ historic win — retaining their European title and becoming the first England football team ever to win a major trophy abroad — will be celebrated with full national honors:

  • Monday (28 July): Special reception at Downing Street hosted by Deputy PM Angela Rayner and Sports Minister Stephanie Peacock.
  • Tuesday (29 July): A victory parade through central London, ending with a ceremony outside Buckingham Palace. The event is free to the public and will also be broadcast live on TV.

A Legacy Cemented

With this win, the Lionesses join Germany as the only women’s team to have successfully defended a European Championship title. But perhaps more importantly, they’ve won the hearts of a nation once again — and even helped usher in a new royal voice.

Princess Charlotte’s debut in public commentary reflects her growing confidence and the strong bond she shares with her father, who is also President of the English FA.

And if last night is any sign, the future of both football and the monarchy looks bright — and proud to be English.
