Nicole Kidman Says Movie Sets Taught Her Makeup — and Regrets “Torturing” Her Curls

Nicole Kidman may be known for her flawless red carpet looks, but the Hollywood star says her beauty skills were actually honed behind the scenes — not in front of a mirror, but on movie sets.

In a recent interview with WWD, the award-winning actress revealed that she learned to do her own makeup by watching professional artists at work while playing different characters. Working closely with top creatives like director Baz Luhrmann and costume designer Catherine Martin taught her how cosmetics can transform not just a face, but a persona.

“When you’re working with someone like Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin, there’s a very specific look they want for the character,” Nicole explained. “As I was being created by others and experimenting, they were teaching me how to use makeup in particular ways. I could then go and use that in real life.”

Nicole shared that her relationship with makeup and skincare has evolved over time. She went through various phases — trying masks, testing products — until it became more than routine. It became fun.

“I learned I can change aspects of my face, augment things, and it became much more creative and exciting,” she said.

Now a brand ambassador for luxury cosmetics label Clé de Peau Beauté, Nicole said the partnership was a natural fit. “I’d already been using so many of their products. It wasn’t like I was going to have to discover them, and I was in.”

However, not all beauty experiments had happy endings. Nicole admits she damaged her natural curls over the years in a quest to fit a certain image. Once longing to be the bronzed, beachy Aussie girl with long blonde hair, she over-straightened her iconic red ringlets — a decision she now regrets.

“I tortured them to death,” she told Who magazine. “I always say, ‘Don’t ruin the ringlets!’”

She’s also candid about her past sun habits, acknowledging that she wishes she’d been more cautious after a skin cancer diagnosis. “Do I wish I’d been more careful with the sun? Yes, to all those things,” she said. “But am I grateful to be around? Oh, yeah. And am I willing to share my knowledge, what I’ve learnt along the way? Absolutely.”

Nicole Kidman’s beauty journey is full of trial, error, and transformation — but it’s also proof that real glamour is about learning, evolving, and owning your story.
