NFL Legend Mike Ditka Dead at 86

Mike Ditka, one of the most iconic figures in NFL history, has died. He was 86. His family announced his death Friday in a statement: “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Mike Ditka. While the world knew Mike as a Hall of Fame football player, legendary coach, and leader of the Chicago Bears’ Super Bowl XX championship team, we knew him as the heart of our family. Mike will be missed beyond measure and remembered forever.” The cause of death has not been released.

The Mike Ditka dead news closes a career that spanned nearly five decades in professional football. He played tight end from 1961 to 1972, winning a championship with the Chicago Bears in 1963 and earning a reputation as one of the toughest players of his era. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1988.

Ditka is best known for coaching the 1985 Chicago Bears to a dominant Super Bowl XX victory, one of the most celebrated teams in NFL history. He also coached the New Orleans Saints and later became a beloved pop culture figure, starring in commercials and appearing in the recurring Saturday Night Live sketch “Bill Swerski’s Superfans,” where he was celebrated alongside “Da Bears.” He battled health issues throughout his life, suffering a stroke in 2012 and a major heart attack in 2018. He is survived by his wife and four children, three sons and one daughter. He was 86.
