Monica finally addressed the rumors head-on. During an Instagram Live session on Sunday, the R&B legend explained exactly how she earned the infamous “Goonica” nickname, and why fans will never see that side of her today. The conversation quickly turned to practical self-defense advice as she weighed in on the recent viral attack involving rapper Ice Spice at a Hollywood McDonald’s.
“I saw somebody say, ‘Why y’all call her that? We ain’t never seen her,’” Monica recalled, laughing. “And you won’t. ‘Cause you’re too young.”
The Atlanta native, who grew up in the College Park area, admitted fighting was simply part of survival in her neighborhood. One specific moment changed everything: watching someone die after hitting their head during a fight when she was young. “Fighting to me looked very different after that,” she said. “I don’t fight anymore. I don’t condone it.”
But that doesn’t mean she never had to learn. “When a big girl picks you up and drops you one good time, you don’t let that happen twice,” Monica explained. “That happened one time. When you fight, you win some and you lose some.”
Monica then pivoted to practical self-defense, seemingly referencing the recent viral video where rapper Ice Spice was attacked by a random fan inside a Hollywood McDonald’s.
“I saw a video the other day,” Monica said. “Something happened to this other young lady.” Her advice was direct and urgent: never let someone stand over you. She emphasized situational awareness and not allowing an attacker to gain a dominant position.
The singer didn’t name Ice Spice directly but made her stance clear. Violence isn’t something she celebrates, but being prepared is non-negotiable. “The main thing,” Monica added before trailing off, leaving fans leaning in. Her message landed: the Goonica era is over, but the lessons learned during those years are still sharp.
