Popular gospel singer Mercy Chinwo has slammed controversial social media activist VeryDarkMan (VDM) with a N1.1 billion lawsuit over alleged defamatory social media posts regarding her ongoing contract dispute with her former record label boss, EeZee Tee.
The lawsuit, filed at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, accuses VDM of making false, damaging, and unprovoked statements against Chinwo on Instagram between February 2nd and 17th, 2025.
Chinwo, through her lawyer Pelumi Olajengbesi, is demanding that VDM delete the posts, issue a public apology across social media, and publish the apology in two national newspapers — all while seeking a whopping N1 billion in general damages and an additional N100 million in punitive damages.
The drama stems from Chinwo’s contract fallout with EeZee Tee, where the record label boss is accused of diverting $345,000 in royalties. However, VDM took to social media to accuse Mercy Chinwo of secretly booking shows without remitting money to the label — a claim Chinwo insists is completely false.
Her lawyer argued that VDM’s statements were made to tarnish Mercy Chinwo’s image and discredit her brand without any direct involvement in the dispute. The posts, which allegedly portrayed Chinwo in a caricatured and disdainful manner, have caused significant harm to her public image, emotional well-being, and professional standing.
The suit is seeking:
• The removal of all defamatory posts from VDM’s social media.
• A public apology on Instagram and two national newspapers for 14 consecutive days.
• N1 billion in general damages.
• N100 million in aggravated damages.
• N25 million in legal fees.
• 10% interest on the judgment sum per annum until the final settlement.
